The Wonderful Qingpu Summer Camp

From July 4th through July 6th and from July 11th through July 13th, You Dao launched the "growth in learning" summer camp at the Qingpu activity center. The camp was filled with a variety of activities, including dance, arts and craft, music instrument and many more.
After the children learned about the rules at the opening ceremony, the children met the Bollywood dance teacher, Priti. She is very graceful and the Indian music made the children curious and eager to learn.
Yan paper art is a unique paper art. It is difficult to learn, but with the teacher's encouragement, the children slowly grasped the basic shape of the production techniques. After three days of practice, the children turned paper strips into a piece of wonderful artwork.
Volunteer Meng Meng taught the children how to make firecracker knots. The knots look like small pimples and it was difficult for the children to make. She patiently helped each of them. Finally all children were proud of their accomplishment.
Chinese calligraphy is one of the most difficult writings to master. Teacher Josephine taught the children the history of Chinese calligraphy , different types of writing brushes. The children followed the writing posture, and started to learn the way to hold the brush properly. Josephine and Eleanor taught the children to practice the most basic strokes – horizontal, vertical, lifting and hook. The children followed attentively as if they were calligraphers.
During the second week of the camp, You Dao added some new curriculum. The children learned to play recorder, one of the simplest one to master in all music instruments. Teachers Kailey, Norman, Victor, Justin, and Alison taught the children from how to understand tones, to realize the importance of working hard and not to give up in learning. The hard work paid off and by the third class, the children were able to play "Ode to Joy.” Although it was not perfect, the children made great progress.
Teacher Lavina also taught children origami, by cutting, folding and pasting the papers. The children turned paper into a variety of interesting animals, such as: dragonfly, mouse, and many more.
The children also learned about blow painting and finger printing, which sparked their curiosity. Under the guidance of teacher Louisa, the children created paintings of branches and tree trunks by blowing paints through the straws; then by dipping their hands with paints, bees, butterflies, elephants, crabs and other interesting animals were magically appeareded. A beautiful forest was finally created.
Teacher Edwina taught the children about soap making. The teacher demonstrated to the children how to make colorful soap.
Lv Shuyan taught the children about modern dance. The children showed great passion and improved a lot.
Teacher Lavina and Jennifer also taught the children how to make Chinese knot bracelet. The children were very excited and efficient. Very soon, bracelets were on their little hands already!
In the final class, Kailey, Norman, Victor, and Justin made Rainbow Loom and had a Nerf Gun battle game with the children. It was a great way to enjoy and wave goodbye to the last day of the wonderful camp.

I am Kailey and You Dao allowed me to have a great new experience. It was great to help the children learning to play the recorder. The children are really talented, it took them 3 to 4 days to learn a song. It was frustrating at times, but I was so proud to hear them playing at the end of the camp. I was proud of them. We all loved teaching the children. We wish we had more time to teach these children and hope there will be more volunteers to help the children. The process of teaching can be hard, but there is a lot of fun in the process. You Dao offers a place to help these children so that they can learn new things. I hope to come back and teach the children new songs. I wish the children good luck in the future learn!

Hi, my name is Norman, I had a great experience with the YouDao community service center in Qingpu when I taught them how to play "ode to Joy" when their recorders. With I first got there, I was mildly annoyed with my parents that I had to come to this filthy and shabby place, I wished I could have stayed at home to play computer game in my air-conditioned room. I became extremely nervous as soon as I walked into the classroom to teach a bunch of kids that I have never met before, but as time went on I became more and more familiar with these children. I started to become close to these children, Even though they were mischievous at times, I still had fun teaching them. Helping these people made me think about myself, I reflected on my life so far, and remembered so many missed opportunities that I could have taken. In the end, I taught them how to play the recorder well, and it really made me feel accomplished. They also gave me something to think about, how I can make the most out of my time. I am blessed with a loving family and a privileged life, I am grateful and I should give back to the community by helping people in need.

I have learned a lot volunteering these past few days. I remember coming in the first day and standing in front of the classroom and seeing so many unfamiliar faces, and then playing “Ode to Joy” with the children and being so proud. The recorder is a difficult instrument to learn and practice, and it can be tough, but it was great to hear the children all wanted to keep practicing late into the night. It was very moving. They are very eager to learn! Although I cannot go to Saturday's graduation ceremony, but I wish you a successful performance! This is my first time to participate in charitable activities but certainly not the last. I also hope to have the opportunity to participate in this meaningful charity again!

First to admit, this is one of the best and most significant moments that ever happened to me in my life. I never went to a charity event before so this was my first experience of charity work. We taught the migrant students recorder and sure they do learn fast. I was impressed and I felt guilty when it suddenly rained, most of the students’ first reactions was to dash outside and check if the clothes they washed and dried by hand was put away safely in their homes. I have an Ayi so I don’t have to worry about those stuff. I learned that I shouldn’t take almost everything for granted because the migrant students have such poor environment to live in and still have such motivation to learn and to live. This is an awesome and authentic experience for me!

I enjoyed teaching migrant children Bollywood dances. I Loved their passion for learning dances which they were never exposed before with the Bollywood music and the dance steps. Their energy is infectious. Just watching them smiling and dancing brings joy to everyone around them.

The summer camp went by too fast! I did not get to play enough. I learned a lot during the camp, especially about learning to play the recorder and Bollywood dance. I grew up a lot and learned from my teachers. I learned to be grateful of others.
